What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation Trusetd Source Checkbox Trusted Source Breast Augmentation 2
ASPS

mammoplasty, Trusetd Source Checkbox
is a surgical procedure that uses breast implants to increase breast size, enhance shape, or restore volume lost due to weight changes, aging, or pregnancy. Whether subtle or more noticeable, the goal is a result that looks natural, complements your proportions, and aligns with your personal aesthetic.

Why Consider Breast Augmentation?

Patients choose breast augmentation for many reasons, including:

  • Enhancing naturally small breasts
  • Restoring breast volume after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss
  • Correcting breast asymmetry
  • Achieving a more balanced silhouette
  • Boosting confidence in and out of clothing

For many women, breast enhancement is about more than aesthetics—it’s about feeling more in tune with their body.

“My goal isn’t just to give you a different look—it’s to help you feel more confident in your body every day. That’s how plastic surgery should feel.”

—Dr. Christa Clark

Your Breast Augmentation Options

No two bodies are exactly alike, and neither are any two breast augmentation procedures. During your personal consultation, we’ll help you explore the choices that make the most sense for your anatomy and your goals.

Saline vs Silicone Implants

We offer both saline and silicone implants, and each has its benefits depending on your desired look, feel, and body type.

Silicone Implants

  • Filled with cohesive silicone gel
  • Soft, natural feel that closely mimics real breast tissue
  • Excellent for leaner patients or those seeking a more natural look

Saline Implants

  • Filled with sterile salt water after placement
  • Adjustable during surgery for fine-tuning size
  • Often chosen for their smaller Trusetd Source Checkbox Trusted Source Types of Breast Implants ASPS Go to Source incision size Trusetd Source Checkbox and peace of mind

Implant Shape, Size & Profile

Your ideal result depends on more than just volume. Implant shape and profile play a major role in your overall look.

  • Shape: Most patients choose round implants for a full, natural appearance. These provide upper pole fullness without looking artificial.
  • Size: We’ll guide you through sizing based on your frame, current breast tissue, and how much enhancement you want.
  • Profile: Implant profile affects how far the breast projects from the chest—options include low, moderate, and high.

Placement options

At your consultation, you and your surgeon will discuss implant placement options; that is, how will your implants be positioned in your chest? The answer depends on your anatomy, which implants you have selected, and your personal preference.

Over the muscle: subglandular placement

For this option, breast implants are positioned below the existing breast tissue and above the pectoral muscles. Because the muscle isn’t affected, recovery tends to be quicker and final results often show sooner with this option.

However, it’s best for patients who have adequate breast tissue to conceal the implant and reduce the chance of visible edges or rippling. Since many women seeking breast augmentation have little breast tissue to begin with, our doctors use subglandular placement in only a small number of patients.

Under the muscle: submuscular placement

The majority of our breast augmentation patients choose submuscular placement. For this option, your doctor releases the lower attachment of the pectoral muscle to create a “pocket” and places the implant beneath the muscle and the breast tissue.

While breast augmentation recovery takes a little longer with submuscular implant placement, it results in a more natural look for most patients, as the implant has plenty of tissue coverage. Your chest muscles will function just fine once you are healed.

Incision Options

Dr. Clark primarily uses two incision techniques during breast augmentation (you may require additional incisions if you’re having a breast lift as well). Both incision techniques leave discreet scars that are difficult to detect once healed, as long as you follow your doctor’s post-op care instructions.

Inframammary Incision

This is the most common incision technique our doctors use during breast augmentation. It involves a short, horizontal incision located in the natural fold underneath your breast. It’s hidden from view by the breast itself, as well as any swimsuit or bra.

Peri-areolar Incision

An alternative technique we occasionally use is the peri-areolar incision. For this we make an incision that traces the outer edge of the areola. Once healed, the scar is camouflaged by the naturally darker skin of the areola and easily concealed by a bra.

How does Dr. Clark determine which incision technique to use?

Several factors go into the mix to determine incision type: what implant size and type you’re getting, your anatomy, and what your doctor feels will produce the most natural result. Dr. Clark will discuss the pros and cons of each incision choice as they apply to you at your consultation.

  • Pause certain medications. You may need to temporarily stop supplements or prescriptions that increase bleeding risk.
  • Avoid nicotine. Smoking or vaping can interfere with healing—plan to quit for several weeks before and after your procedure.

What to Expect from Surgery

Breast augmentation surgery typically takes about one hour and is performed under general anesthesia in our surgical suite. You’ll be monitored as you wake up, then released to recover at home the same day. Your incisions will be covered, and you’ll wear a soft surgical bra for support.

Every recovery is a little different, but most patients experience the following timeline:

  • 1–3 Days: Initial swelling, tightness, and mild discomfort—manageable with medication
  • 1 Week: Many return to desk work and light activities
  • 2–3 Weeks: Bruising and swelling begin to subside
  • 4–6 Weeks: Most normal activities and workouts resume
  • 3–6 Months: Final shape settles in; incisions continue to fade

We’ll see you for multiple follow-ups to ensure you’re healing beautifully and loving your results.
