PRP (Platelet-rich plasma) Treatments in Granite Bay
What if the secret to looking younger is already in your blood?
There are a ton of great products made by dermatology experts that can help your skin resist the aging process and look its best—but one of the best “products” is actually made by your blood.
Platelets are tiny blood cells that are packed with growth factors (proteins and other nutrients) that help cells heal and regenerate. Plasma, the liquid component of blood, contains a lot of similar nutrients. When you get injured, platelets rush to the damaged cells (riding the plasma wave) and dump out their growth factors to help the area heal faster.
What is platelet rich plasma (and what’s so great about it)?
Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is a special preparation of your own blood that contains just platelets and plasma. We take a small sample from your arm (comparable to what your doc takes for routine labs), and then centrifuge (spin out) to separate out the other stuff. The result is a super-concentrated source of growth factors that we can apply directly to the face, scalp or body to address flaws and rejuvenate aging skin. PRP floods the area with growth factors, which makes your cells very happy and stimulates new collagen production and cell turnover.
Benefits of PRP
- It’s a fast, easy treatment that takes only 30 minutes on average
- No downtime is needed
- Virtually no risk of side effects, since your own blood is used
- Your skin cells know exactly what to do with platelets, so it’s almost guaranteed to have an effect.
- Combining PRP with other skin treatments has a synergistic effect, helping to speed and enhance hair regrowth
At GBC, we can use PRP in three different ways: injections for skin rejuvenation, applied topically with the SkinPen microneedling device, and for hair restoration.
PRP injections to rejuvenate aging skin
We can inject PRP in tiny amounts into the face, neck, chest, or hands to target specific signs of aging naturally as a sole treatment. Just as often, we’ll use PRP to complement and speed onset of results with other rejuvenating treatments, such as filler injections or laser treatments. Adding PRP to your treatment plan can be a great way to:
- Minimize fine lines
- Improve skin firmness and texture
- Rejuvenate aging hands
- Accelerate results of your at-home skincare or in-office treatments
PRP with Microneedling
PRP and microneedling go together like peanut butter and jelly! They’re the perfect pair to take full advantage of your skin’s natural healing and regeneration capability: microneedling creates microscopic openings in the skin, which your body interprets as tiny little injuries—this stimulates a natural flood of platelets and their collagen-boosting growth factors to the skin.
By adding PRP, either topically (which lets the microneedling device push the PRP into the skin), or via injections, we can pack in many times more growth factors to achieve more pronounced improvements, more quickly than we could with either treatment alone. Hair Restoration with PRP
Non-surgical platelet therapy to reduce thinning hair
The same growth factors that make PRP a superpower for skin rejuvenation can also help slow hair loss. In essence, PRP injections into thinning areas on your scalp can help hair growth catch up with hair loss, so instead of becoming thinner, your hair becomes gradually fuller and thicker.
Am I a good candidate for PRP hair loss treatments?
If you’re bothered by thinning hair around your temples, brow, or other smaller areas, but you aren’t ready for hair transplants, PRP is an option to consider. You do still need to have some hair growth activity for PRP to work—it can’t do anything for totally dormant hair follicles, so it’s usually not effective for advanced stages of balding. However, if you’re in the early phases of hair loss, PRP can help “fill in the gaps” and help you enjoy fuller, thicker hair for several months or longer.
When will I see results?
Typically, we recommend a series of 3 to 4 treatments to achieve optimal results with PRP for hair restoration. Results are gradual and full within a couple of months. Once a treatment series is complete, most patients can go up to 6 months or 1 year before getting a booster treatment (a booster or maintenance treatment is recommended at least once per year).
